Food circus
Alice Waters, the grande dame of the sustainable cuisine movement, and Slow Food USA just announced that they're organizing a mammoth artisanal food show for fall 2007. The event would include tastings, films, and seminars put on by chefs and farmers dedicated to eco-friendly eating. It would be the largest expo of its kind ever to take place on U.S. soil, and "Slow Food Nation" has been kicked around as a possible name--an apt description for today's booming green culinary scene.
The conventional fast-food industry is still up to its old tricks, though: An Illinois baseball began selling an insanely caloric donut burger earlier this week, and Hardee's shows no qualms about its 1420-calorie Thickburger ("the only thing that can slay the hunger of a young guy on the move," according to the Hardee's website).
While a burger sandwiched between two donuts does sound weirdly delicious, the fact that fast-food joints are deliberately thumbing their noses at health concerns is disconcerting (though not particularly surprising). Sure, maybe some people can eat a few bites of donut-encased meat and walk away guilt-free, but most of us are more likely to finish everything on our plates--and recent studies have shown that people don't compensate for high-calorie meals by eating less at the next meal.
