Add another to the free for all

In issue 11 of Plenty, we covered Freegans, the dumpster divers extraordinaire. We also mentioned some starting points for your own dumpster diving, like DumpsterWorld, along with regifting community at Freecycle, for those who don't wish to engange in a garbage hunt just yet.

Joining their ranks comes FreeMesa.org, a website dedicated helping people to find needed items for the best price possible—free! FreeMesa hopes to reduce consumption and waste through recycling while also improving the living standards of those in need (and those just needing some free space), stressing the importance of how we should help each other through these regiftings.

Still a world (and ocean!) of Plenty

What's blonde, blind, and over 7,500 feet underwater? Kiwa hirsute, of course. This new species of furry crustacean, recently discovered 900 miles south of Easter Island, is so distinctive that scientists created an entirely new family and genus for it. As reports of newly discovered species continue to rock the scientific community--remember last month's report about Indonesia's Lost World?-- the need to care for the environment has become even more pressing. Return of the Swap-O-Rama-Rama

In the last issue of PLENTY (Issue 8: The Unlikely Environmentalists), we covered how Wendy Tremayne's Swap-O-Rama-Rama is helping revive the DIY movement in New York City (Change is in the Air, pages 19-21). If you missed this event the last time around, you're in luck as the next Swap-O-Rama-Rama is being held again in Brooklyn, NY this Sunday (Feb 12) from 2-7pm. All you have to bring is $10 and a bag of unwanted clothes and you'll have access to all the half-hour-long workshops and DIY materials needed to personalize everything you swap for. You can also take a break from modding your new finds to watch films like Jess Dobkin's Restored project and Faye Lederman's A Good Uplift. There's even a stand up comedy act by Jessica Delfino.
