Screenwriting for a Clean Commute

For a fun eco-activity this week, allow us to suggest something so convenient you won’t even need to get up from your computer, or interact with a single human being. Go to www.StartupTime.com and watch the 30-second animated clip you’ll find there. It’s a series pilot animation spot about the yet-to-be-invented “Commuter Pod,” an eco-friendly and 100% recycled car of the future. Future Commuter Pod “webisodes” will be generated by you, the eco web browser, so if you’re feeling creative and inspired, click on “meet the cast.” Use the characters you’ll find there—characters like Winston the Dreamer, Bellalina the Inventor, Embarrassed CEO, and Professor the Mentor— to create your own storyline. So far, visitors have come up with ideas for human-powered, Flintstone-esque pods, solar-powered pods, and more.

Series creators Molly Lavik and Jeff Rozic of Mentorography (digital diaries of socially responsible entrepreneurs), hope that this “open source innovation” project, to be produced by Emmy-winning Animax Entertainment, will get people thinking creatively about the environment and the future of transportation, and inspire them to collectively invent the car of the future. And once they’ve invented the car of the future, they plan to manufacture it—out in the Midwest, in communities that have been hit by downsizing and outsourcing in the motor industry. Lavik puts it mildly: “We have big goals.”

This is really an important trend in the eco world. Just as the health, organic, and eco lifestyles are merging (see LOHAS as an example) we are starting to see genuine synergy between "green" and the open source ethic. Got to hand it to the Mentorography folks for once again recognizing and driving a major trendline in the eco space.

This looks great! Just what the world needs: civic engagement on society's toughest issues.

What a fabulous idea! This is a great way to get people thinking more creatively about ways to help to protect our environment. Great job Molly and Jeff!
