The Garbage Collector
African artist El Anatsui transforms trash into art.
When most of us see an empty milk bottle or can of food, our impulse is to toss it in the recycling bin or trash can. In the hands of acclaimed African artist El Anatsui, however, such would-be garbage is reshaped into stunning artwork. Anatsui stitches together a variety of discarded everyday objects—from flattened food tins to bottle tops to cassava graters—creating large, metallic tapestries that are reminiscent of traditional Ghanaian woven kente cloth. This slide show offers a look at several of the pieces in the touring exhibition El Anatsui: Gawu, which will be on display in from April 22 to August 26 at the Fowler Museum at UCLA.
