Weather Forecast
The change from 2006 to 2007 brought an onslaught of predictions and horoscopes for what the next year would hold. Now, Britain is joining the fray of soothsayers. It’s prediction? 2007 will be the hottest year yet (and not in a fun, party-type way.)
Britain’s Meteorological Office, along with the University of Anglia, recently made its annual global forecast. The office says that 2007 will likely bring the highest global temperatures on record, due to the effects of global warming and El Niño. 1998 was the former champion of global temperatures, and 2006 ranked as the sixth hottest year on record. From a Reuters article:
The highly respected Met Office…said it expected the world’s average temperature to be 0.54 degrees Celsius above the 1961-1990 long-term average of 14.0 degrees.
There is a 60 percent probability that 2007 will be as warm or warmer than the current warmest year, 1998, which itself was 0.52 degrees above the long-term average it said in a statement.
Everyone knows what horrifying events come with global warming—famine and floods and storms, oh my! So let’s hope that 2007 brings a much-needed international New Year’s resolution to cut back on those nasty greenhouse gas emissions.
