Gore launches global warming campaign
We’re suckers for a good campaign. Remember Wendy's "Where's the beef?", Smokey the Bear’s slogan "Only you can prevent wildfires,” Rosie the Riveter, and the Marlboro Man (he’s so romantic…but remember, smoking is yucky)? Then there are the campaigns that try to convince the public to change their actions. Click It or Ticket was wildly successful. As for the D.A.R.E. program, the day the police officer passed a baggy of pot around our 5th grade class was certainly educational.
We’ve got our fingers crossed for former VP Al Gore’s climate change ad campaign, which launched yesterday. The three-year, $300 million advocacy campaign is about to inundate the public with its call to fight global warming. The Alliance for Climate Protection is spearheading the operation, dubbed “We,” which the group says will reach people through online organizing, advertising, and partnering with grass-roots organizations to educate the public about global warming and encourage folks to pester elected officials for solutions. Take a look at the first ad in the national campaign.
We like the inclusiveness of the name, the we’re-all-in-this-together mentality, but at the same time, might it not lead to confusion?
Johnny: Have you heard of “We”?
Mikey: Duh, I’ve known about Wii for ever. Have you been living under a rock?
Johnny: Uh, no. So you’re a supporter?
Mikey: I can’t get enough of it. It’s, like, the most important thing in my life—especially the boxing.
But we digress. Check out Plenty’s breakdown of the campaign. And if you’re wondering if “we” has the power to change our environmental behaviors and our nation’s climate policy, read our recent magazine feature, Monkeying with the Message.
